Pro Tip: Build a Progressive Warm-up Library (And Save Hours of Programming Time)

Ever find yourself creating the same basic warm-up sequences over and over for different clients? It's one of those repetitive tasks that silently eats away at your valuable coaching time – time you could be spending on higher-value activities.

What It Is:

A progressive warm-up library is a collection of pre-built, customized warm-up sequences that address specific client limitations, build foundational skills, and prepare the body for optimal performance. By creating these templates once and storing them in your CoachRx library, you can quickly apply them to any client's program while maintaining a personalized, professional approach.

How to Use It:

Step 1: Create Template Warm-ups in Your Library

  • Navigate to the Index section and select "Warm-ups"

  • Create named templates for common client needs (e.g., "Shoulder Mobility 1," "Hip Opener," "Core Activation")

  • Add detailed instructions for each exercise in the sequence

  • Attach demo videos so clients understand proper execution

  • Save each template to your library

Step 2: Build Progressive Sequences

  • Create multiple versions of the same warm-up (e.g., Shoulder Mobility 1, 2, and 3)

  • Progress movements from simpler to more complex versions

  • Increase range of motion, load, or complexity with each progression

  • Design each sequence to build upon skills developed in the previous version

Step 3: Apply Templates to Client Programs

  • When designing a client workout, navigate to the warm-up section

  • Type the name of your pre-built warm-up and select it from the dropdown

  • Assign the appropriate progression based on the client's current abilities

  •  Program each progression for 2-3 weeks before advancing to the next level

Step 4: Educate Your Clients

  • Explain the purpose behind each warm-up element

  • Clarify that warm-ups are productive training time addressing specific limitations

  • Set appropriate time expectations (not too short, not too long)

  • Connect warm-up objectives to their overall progress and goals

Why It Matters:

This approach transforms warm-ups from a basic necessity into a strategic component of your programming, delivering multiple benefits:

For Your Clients:

  • Addresses limitations that might otherwise require separate corrective sessions

  • Builds foundational skills and movement capacity without adding training volume

  • Primes the body for optimal performance in the main workout

  • Creates progressive improvement in areas of weakness over time

For Your Business:

  • Saves hours of programming time each week

  • Demonstrates your professionalism and attention to detail

  • Differentiates your service from generic programming approaches

  • Creates systematic progress that clients can feel and see

As James FitzGerald often emphasizes, "The professional coach attends to the details others overlook." A thoughtfully designed warm-up system is exactly the kind of detail that elevates your coaching from good to truly exceptional.

This week's challenge: Review the warm-up protocols for 3-5 of your clients. Are they truly individualized based on their assessments? Do they progressively address limitations? Are they specific to that day's training demands? Make these adjustments and watch how this simple change improves results across your client roster.
